2010 STATE TOURNAMENT GAME NOTES

Elkhorn Valley 62, Silver Lake 51
(3/05/10) LINCOLN, NE (KBRX SPORTS) -- Coach Brendan Dittmer said before the D-One Semi-Finals on Friday morning that the keys to a win over undefeated Silver Lake was to play physical, draw fouls, get into the Mustangs bench, and shoot free throws.

Yep.

He could not of been more right if he had watched the tape before the game started.

The Elkhorn Valley Lady Falcons would defeat the Silver Lake Lady Mustangs 62-to-51 to seal a trip to the finals on Saturday behind a 15-of-26 day shooting free throws and shooting nearly 49% from the floor while the Mustangs fought foul trouble down the stretch as both Kayla Timm and leading scorer Cami Bruckman would foul out in the fouth quarter.

Elkhorn Valley never trailed after pulling ahead ten-to-seven midway through the first quarter and despite the Mustangs knocking down some key three-pointers the Falcons answered every run and and built a lead at 18-to-nine at the end of the first and leads as big as 20 points through the second half.

The Falcons offense clicked as well while shooting 51% inside the arch and a solid 38% from downtown, the green-and-white dominated the glass with 10 offensive rebounds and six points off the glass while allowing the Mustangs just two points off the glass.

The pressure from the Mustangs was a bit daunting but the Falcons did not let 16 turnovers bother them and behind some salty ball handling by Sadie Rich off the bench.

The bench was big as well. While the Mustangs just two points out of non-starters, the Falcons bench poured in 17 behind the bench play of Sadie Rich.
Rich actually led the Falcons in scoring with 17, while Kyliegh Parham added another 12 and Halle Dittrich finished with 10 on the day.

Silver Lake played well behind senior Cami Bruckman. Despite suffering what looked to be a broken nose in the first quarter, Bruckman still finished with 21 whiel Shelby Rpprecht tossed down 13 and Baily Morris added 11.

Silver Lake had to use seven three pointers to stay in the game as long as they could put shot just 30% from behind the arch, 35% from inside the two-point range and hit just four-of-ten attempted free throws.

The Falcons improve to 17-and-seven with the win an advance to the State Champion game for the first time since 1982. In the Bob they will meet 22-and-three East Butler.

Silver Lake suffers their first loss of the year falling to 24-and-one. They move on to the consolation game to take on the 23-and-two Humphrey Bulldogs.

Elkhorn Valley 44, SMC 20  (QUARTERFINALS)

(3/04/10) Lincoln (KBRX SPORTS) --  The Elkhorn Valley Lady Falcons only managed 19 points in the first half of the 2010 D-One Girls Basketball Quarterfinals but their defense would allow just 20 the entire game from the Stapleton/McPhearson County Lady Cyclones as the Falcons advanced with a 44-to-20 win on Thursday afternoon.

The game was all defense really as the Falcons led five-to-nothing before the Cyclones would score their first basket of the day at 1:46 to go in the first period.

The would hold the Cyclones to four in points in the first and jsut three in the second to lead 19-to-seven at the half.

The Falcons defense stayed solid and they got a little more offense down the stretch.

After trailing 33-to-14 and the end of the three quarters, the Cyclones scored the four points of the fourth quarter and had the lead cut to 13 with 3:15 to play.  That is went Falcon Coach Brendan Dittmer took and time out and the Falcons came blowing of the bench in an eight point run to seal the contest 44-to-20.

Kyleigh Parham would lead the Falcons with 16 points but no other Falcon would enter double figures.

Chrystina Contreras would lead the Cylones with 11 off the bench as defense again dictated the contest.

Elkhorn  Valley forced 28 Cyclone turnovers that led to 24 points on the other end.

The Falcons committed 21 points of there own and shot just 37% inside the three-point arch and seven-of-14 from the free throw line.

Despite the less the stellar performance on the offensive side, the Falcons defense forced the issue for the win and they advance to take on Silver Lake on Friday in the D1 State Semi-Finals at 10:45AM Friday morning.

You can catch the game on 102.9FM and online at KBRX.com.

2010 STATE TOURNAMENT GAME NOTES

CHAMBERS 68, SEM 51 (QUATERFINALS)

(3/04/10) LINCOLN (KBRX SPORTS)  -- The Chambers Lady Coyotes played at their second home court, that would be the Girls State Tournament and proved to be too much to handle for S-E-M.

A patented Chambers defense would put the Coyotes ahead 28-8 at the end of the first quarter with Erin Devries putting 9 first-quarter points on the board for Chambers.

In the second quarter S-E-M would outscore the Coyotes 12-11 however Chambers would see over 10 different players in action and the Coyotes would take a 39-to-20 lead into the locker room at half time.

S-E-M would continue to play hard through the third quarter and again outscore the Coyotes 21-17 and at one time pulling to within 14 points of the Coyotes.  But just as quickly as they would chew away at the lead, the Coyotes would get the lead back to 21 points at different times.  At the end of the third Chambers would lead 56-to-41.

Chambers would keep their lead and not allow S-E-M to get any closer than 15 in the fourth quarter and keep their lead to end the game with a 68-to-51 win over the Mustangs.

Along with their stellar defense which saw S-E-M commit 18 turnovers and Chambers scoring 16 points off of those turnovers, the Coyotes also shot 11-of-13 from the free throw line, shot 58% on two point goals and 39% on three pointers.

Chambers improves their record to 24-and-1 and will face Wynot on Saturday afternoon at 3:45 pm at the Pershing Center.  Wynot defeated St. Mary’s in the District Final to make it to state and was a 50-to-40 winner over Hitchcock County.

You can catch the game on 102.9FM KBRX O'Neill and on www.kbrx.com.
